‘Sex and the City,’ television show staring Sarah Jessica Parker, earned its popularity with U.S. citizens due to erotic female gossip and romantic comedy. The television series was awarded 8 Golden Globes and over 50 Emmy awards. The countless nominations inspired Miguel Falabella, the show's writer, to remake the show for its Brazilian viewers. "Sexo e es Negas" star four black women that are poor, searching for love, and having fun. Falabella denies allegations of racism or racist stereotyping. Yet, the series title uses a Brazilian Portuguese term “negas” which is mostly used as a derogatory word towards black women. Falabella stand by his belief of the show bringing the same comedy as the original series. However, Falabella did not expect the series to attract such disgust from its audience. Campaigns have been formed to get the series cancelled from the network and it urges advertisers to stop sponsoring the show. It seems the public is displeased with the series objectives. Marana de Paula stated, “What bothers me the most, besides the stereotypes that are reinforced in this series is the title. A title that, for me, refers to the time of slavery, where we were constantly raped. Stigma remains, as symbols of sexuality (but never of beauty, never of success).
I can understand the negative reviews towards Sexo e es Negas series. It seems as though the title curves its viewer’s opinion in a negative light before they can even over look the poor story line. The original ‘Sex and the City’ title does not have a direct link to any racial identification. Shows that highlight single ladies and their sexual habits will always have a double standard review compared to male or couple based shows. Would you watch Sexo e es Negas regardless of its title?
